WHY I FOUNDED EMPOWHERNEXUS

Taylor Clark
Founder & Chief Steward

I met the metrics. Then they moved the finish line—again and again. After an entire year of exceeding expectations, my reward could be a raise of 3% or less, and that was for OUTSTANDING reviews given to me by upper management. Meanwhile, the company newsletter celebrated record profits. Eventually, you have to ask: Who is this system actually built to reward?

I spent years working in retail leadership, managing employees, inventory, operations and the constant demands required to keep a business running. I worked hard. I accepted responsibility. I solved problems, supported my teams and met the performance metrics placed in front of me.

Then the expectations increased.

I met those too.

I did not simply show up and wait for the day to end. I constantly pushed myself and my teams to reach those goals. I worked long, physically demanding hours, came in when help was needed and carried responsibilities that followed me long after I clocked out. I believed that if I continued proving myself, the effort would eventually be recognized and rewarded.

Instead, the finish line kept moving.

The longer I worked that way, the more I began asking a different question: At what point is a worker’s health expected to deteriorate just to keep producing for a company whose leaders do not know their name, would not recognize their face and may never take the time to say hello?

Long hours wear down the body. Constant pressure wears down the mind. Missing time with family, working through pain and living in a permanent state of stress all carry a cost. Employees are repeatedly told to give more, move faster and find a way to meet the next goal—but rarely asked what that demand is taking from them.

No metric is worth someone’s physical or mental health. No company should expect endless loyalty, sacrifice and exhaustion from people it refuses to treat as human beings.

After an entire year of having my performance examined under a microscope, I could be told that I had done an excellent job—and then receive a raise of 25 cents or less. Even as inflation caused the cost of housing, food, utilities and transportation to climb, the people doing the daily work were still expected to survive on pennies.

It gets old fast, doesn’t it?

What frustrated me most was knowing that my experience was not unusual. I watched hardworking employees give companies their time, energy, health and loyalty while still struggling to afford basic stability. People worked while sick, missed important moments with their families, accepted additional responsibilities and carried the weight of understaffed workplaces. Yet many still had to choose which bill could wait until the next paycheck.

Then the company newsletter would arrive celebrating another year of record profits.

Those profits did not appear out of nowhere. They were created by people—the cashiers, stockers, technicians, managers, warehouse workers, drivers and countless others whose labor kept everything moving. Yet the greatest rewards continued flowing upward while the people responsible for producing those results were treated like expenses to be controlled.

I could no longer accept the idea that this was simply how business had to operate.

EmpowHERnexus is my answer to that system.

I founded this company because I believe a business can be profitable without exploiting people. Profit is necessary for a company to survive and grow, but it should not come at the cost of human dignity. Employees should be paid fairly, treated with respect and recognized as part of the company’s success. When people work hard and help a business thrive, they should be seen, valued and allowed to share in the rewards they helped create.

That is also why I call myself the Chief Steward—not simply the CEO. Leadership should not mean sitting above everyone else and collecting the greatest reward. It should mean accepting responsibility for the people, resources and communities placed in your care. A leader should serve the mission, protect its values and remain accountable to the people helping build it.

I also believe the responsibility of a business extends beyond its employees. Companies depend on communities for customers, workers, infrastructure and support. When a business succeeds, the community surrounding it should benefit from that success instead of being drained by it.

That belief became the foundation of the Hive.

The Hive is our growing network of customers, employees, creators, ethical businesses, advocates and community partners. In nature, a hive survives because every contribution matters and its strength comes from cooperation. EmpowHERnexus follows that same principle: we are stronger when we stop struggling separately and begin using our different skills, voices and resources collectively.

We are beginning with mission-driven apparel and products that allow people to wear the message, start conversations and help finance the company’s growth. The clothing is not the entire mission. It is the engine intended to help us build it.

As revenue grows, our long-term vision is to create ethical jobs and support meaningful work related to affordable housing, food and water security, community partnerships and opportunities for people who are too often overlooked. We want to help build communities where people can move beyond survival and begin creating stable, fulfilling lives.

We are still at the beginning. I will never pretend that EmpowHERnexus has already accomplished work that remains ahead of us. Right now, we are building the foundation, growing awareness and creating the revenue needed to turn this vision into measurable action. I would rather earn people’s trust honestly than make promises simply because they sound impressive.

But this is no longer just an idea. I legally established the company, obtained an EIN, opened dedicated business accounts, secured the domain, developed the branding and original apparel concepts, created business and promotional materials and began building a public movement. I have taken this as far as I can with the resources currently available—and I am not stopping here.

This is personal to me.

EmpowHERnexus is the kind of company I wish more of us had been given the opportunity to work for: one where morality and ethics can be seen in real time, where employees are treated as human beings and where success strengthens the entire Hive instead of only those sitting at the top.

I am angry about what I have witnessed, but anger alone changes nothing. I am turning that anger into action and building the alternative I was told could not exist.

EmpowHERnexus is not just another clothing brand.

It is the beginning of a different kind of business—one built with people, for the people.
